Asheville, Sept. 4—Two men, Conductor Everett E. Carr and Flagman Ross Smith, both of Asheville, narrowly escaped death early this morning when the caboose and several cars in a runaway freight train leaped from the rails on Saluda mountain, near Melrose station, on the Asheville-Spartanburg division of the Southern railway.
Conductor Carr was brought to a local hospital where he was reported to be resting comfortably at noon today. The flagman was not seriously hurt, but he was so greatly shocked and bruised that he was unable to continue on his run.
Engineer Perkins was at the throttle on the runaway train. The train ran wild when the airbrakes failed to work, according to the trainman.
