S. H. Hand, charged with the larceny of a Hudson automobile, from T. B. Smothers, auctioneer on the Lumberton market, will be tried in Lumberton Recorder’s Court Thursday morning at 10:30, it was decided this morning after witnesses in the case failed to appear.
Hand was arrested in Greensboro Friday and placed under a $1,000 bond for his appearance in Recorder’s Court here this morning. He had been held up at Windsor, Bertie County, by officers who had been notified to arrest him, but he outwitted them, showed them some sort of title to the car and went on his way.
Smothers came to Lumberton as auctioneer on the tobacco market some two weeks ago. He had bought the automobile from Hand in Georgia, and Hand told him that he did not have the title for the car but would deliver it to him here They drove here together, and while Smothers was on the floor of one of the tobacco houses, Hand took the car and left with it.
