James Smith, shot Friday night by Officer N. G. Gwatney when the latter discovered him in the act of stealing a tire from a truck in back of the rear of Raney’s Wholesale Grocery Co., was holding his own, it was stated at the Goldsboro hospital at 1 o’clock this morning. Very little hope, however, is held out for the recovery of the man.
The shot, which struck Smith, was the second that Gwatney fired. The policeman first called upon the man to halt, then fired into the air in an effort to frighten and stop him. The second shot took effect. Officers yesterday pointed out that Smith was hit just before he turned into James street and that once around the corner there would have been no capturing him.
