Chapel Hill, Sept. 17—R. W. Epstein of Rocky Mount and J. B. Mills of Polkton, University of North Carolina students, were suspended today by the student council on charges of conduct tending toward hazing.” Epstein is a junior and Mills is a senior.
The two students were accused of playing pranks on freshmen. The accused men readily admitted the charges but insisted that they did not consider their acts could be construed as hazing or in violation of the university honor system. They were accused fo forcing freshmen to take cold shower baths and to dance the Charleston on a table.
The suspensions were announced in the chapel this morning by S. G. Chappell, president of the student body, who have warning that the student council would not tolerate hazing in any form and that further offenses would be treated with equal severity. He said he did not believe that further incidents would occur.
Asked for a statement, President Chase said he felt extended comment to be unnecessary, that he student council had responded most effectively to nip in the bud what was at present merely a tendency that might, if unchecked, lead to serious misconduct.
