On the afternoon of August 14, about 2:30 o’clock, Miss Sarah E. Shaffner died at the Sisters Home in Salem. She had been in ill health for several months and her death was not unexpected. Her age was 79 years.
Miss Shaffner, known familiarly to the students at Salem as Miss Sallie,” was for about 50 years a member of the faculty of the college, specializing in the study of History, and she was beloved by many students were members of her classes. For the past several years she has been editor of the Alumnae Record.
It is indeed a coincidence that her sister, Miss Louisa Shaffner, also for many years a teacher at the college, died just one year before the date of Miss Sallie’s death.
Miss Shaffner is survived by two nephews, H.F. Shaffner and W.F. Shaffner, both of Winston-Salem, and one niece, Miss Lizette Shaffner.
