Cherokee County Fair In the Red, Oct. 3, 1924

Fair Exceeds Expectations of Officials

The success of the Cherokee County Fair, which closed last Saturday, exceeded the expectations of all the officials and others who have expressed opinions about it. The slow rain that continued almost continuously throughout the entire duration of the annual event greatly checked the attendance and perhaps kept away many exhibits that would have been entered, but still the crowds were satisfactory and all agreed that the exhibits would have done credit to any county. In many ways the fair was superior to that of last year and Manager Ellis and his legion of helpers and advisers are receiving many warm words of praise for their fine work.

Because of the inclement weather, the fair was extended through four days, closing Saturday night instead of Friday night. The word was sent out and quite a good attendance was had on the last day. The night programs featuring the showing of educational films proved a drawing card during the entire fair.

Superintendent Sargeant of the L. & N. arranged to hold over the evening passenger train. Instead of leaving here for Blue Ridge at 2 o’clock it left at 5, thus giving those living in the lower part of the county an opportunity to spend the day at the fair and return home at night. This proved very helpful to the success of the fair.

The financial condition of the Fair Association is as follows: Receipts, $1,133.06. All expenses, including the premium list, $1,924.63, which leaves a shortage of $791.57. Premiums will be paid as soon as this shortage can be covered, officials of the association stated.

While this statement shows quite a shortage, it is conceded by most people that the attendance would have been practically doubled had the weather and roads been good, in which case the finances would have been in a much better condition with perhaps $300 or $400 over expenses.
