'Squire Rutledge, 85, Has Died, Oct. 13, 1924

Prominent Citizen of Stanley Dies Suddenly

‘Squire W.G. Rutledge, 85, of Stanley, N.C., father of J.L. Rutledge, of this city, died suddenly Saturday morning at the residence of his son, Wade R. Rutledge, where he had been making his home for the past five years.

Mr. Rutledge, “squire” as he was known, served in the Civil War and had some dangerous experience. He was mayor of Stanley for 25 years and has served as a justice of peace for nearly 50 years.

Surviving ‘Squire Rutledge, besides his son here, are: John Rutledge, Concord; George Rutledge, Birmingham, Ala.; W.R. and J.G. Rutledge, Stanley; Mrs. D.R. Reedy, Rowland; and Mrs. F.M. Thompson, Birmingham.

Funeral services will be held today at 12 o’clock in the Stanley First Presbyterian church, of which he had been a member for a number of years.
