Four prisoners, three white and one colored, were carried to the State prison at Raleigh this morning by county officers, all having been sentenced at the present term of Cabarrus Superior Court.
The prisoners were Johnny Goins, Sam Spry, Troy Thompson and Frances Smotherman. The first three are white, two of them under 20 years of age, and the last named will serve not less than 18 months for slaying another colored girl here several weeks ago.
Deputy Sheriff Carl Honeycutt and J. A. Goodman accompanied the prisoners, making the trip in an automobile. The officers may return tonight or they may wait until tomorrow.
There were no tears shed when this quartette of law violators started for Raleigh. If there were any sad person it was the colored girl and she didn’t shed any visible tears.
The three white boys were handcuffed together and they laughingly came from the jail, shouting and waving to friends and others standing near. All three were smoking and they seemed more interested in finding a way to handle their cigarettes with one hand than wit their fate in the prison.
Two of the boys were neat in appearance but the other had a rather heavy growth of beard on his face. He also was without collar. None of the prisoners wore coats.
The time was, court house attaches said, when it was a rare time to see whites predominate in a group headed for the State prison. Apparently times have changed here, for the court records show that a majority of the prisoners tried last week were whites.
