Robert Garlind, negro, who killed Guy Black, another negro, last Sunday at Ebenezer Church, was found guilty of manslaughter in the verdict returned by Cabarrus Superior Court here Friday night by a jury which heard the case. The jury was out several hours.
Jake F. Newell of the Charlotte bar assisted in the defense of Garlind, who contended that he shot Black as the latter was approaching on him with a rock. The State contended that Black had made no threats against Garland and that the defendant shot without reason.
Garlind has not yet been sentenced by Judge P.A. McElroy, who is presiding at the present term of court.
Editor’s Note: The newspaper article spelled the last name Garlind and Garland, so I’m using both spellings so that anyone searching for an article with this name will find it whichever spelling is used.
