Swimming Tournament to Begin Aug. 31,1926

Plans for Carolinas’ Swimming Tournament

Gastonia, N.C., Aug. 25 (AP)—Plans are being pushed here by the committee in charge of the first annual Carolinas’ swimming tournament which will be staged here August 31. Contests of the meet are planned for men only and the winners are to receive loving cups and medals.

Charlotte had first asked for the meet but immediate action on the part of the Gastonia committee, composed of Arnold Smith, Sam O. Davis, Harold Sims, Kay Dixon and Charles Marshall, gave the decision to this city.

Races will include a 50-yard dash, 100-yard dash, 220-yard dash, 440-yard swim, 880-yard swim, 50-yard breast stroke, 50-yard back stroke and diving.

With the nearing of the tournament, water actors over the Carolinas are beginning training and officials here expect a large number of competitors to register before the opening day.

Gastonia itself is preparing its team and daily drills comprise the training activities here.

Entry blanks must be in the hands of officials here by August 20.
