Our Forested Mountains, An Unappreciated Gift, Aug. 17, 1926

Our Mountains

What more beauty could be wished for than to stand on the summit of one of our mountain peaks that pierce the heavens and look down into the fertile valleys and see the work of civilization go on?

It is a beauty unsurpassed by the gifted hand any artist. Only God can do such wonders.

As I sometimes look on the beauty of our mountains I wonder if we really appreciate them as we should. Do we do our best to keep them green and growing, or do we carelessly let fire destroy their beauty? If we appreciate them as we should, there would seldom be any forest fires to destroy their grandeur.

If our mountains are not beautiful and pleasing, why do tourists from all parts of the United States come here during the summer season to spend their vacation? There are other places of great importance and grandeur but they have gained their popularity by the works of men and therefore attract little attention when a man is looking for some quiet place to rest. Of course the winter months are cold and severe, but when spring begins to come a feeling of happiness and joy is felt when you hear the singing of the birds and see the flowers begin to open in the morning sun and the great mountains begin to put on their gown of green. It is really something great to behold.

The mountains are not only beautiful but they have the mildest climate and best water found anywhere. Here the nice cool breezes are found and a sparkling spring in every valley surrounded by wild flowers of all kinds.

Now that God has given us all of these glorious things, let us never fail to boost them together with good roads.
