Raleigh, Aug. 13—Raleigh police are jubilant over the capture of Theodore Vinson, youthful and ingenious bootlegger of Raleigh, Goldsboro and other localities, who has successfully eluded arrest for 10 months, despite persistent efforts to nab him.
He met his match here when two detectives, disguised with burnt cork, and fessed in old clothes, lounged around the vicinity of a negro’s house here suspected of being a confederate of Vinson, and when Vinson drove up in his high-powered car, took him into custody. Three regular policemen assisted in making the arrest.
Vinson is being held in jail, unable to make the $5,000 bond. Some eight or 10 different charges are pending against him. His case will be heard next Tuesday, August 17.
Six gallons of whiskey and a pistol were found in Vinson’s car, which was equipped with a “smoke screen” attachment, with which he was to “smoke out” officers who gave chase.
Editor’s Note: The smoke screen attachment obscured the vehicle’s lights, making it difficult to follow a vehicle after dark.
