Albemarle, Aug. 2—Up to this time no action has been taken by the Stanly County road board regarding the dispensing with the services of N. C. Cranford, superintendent of the road construction forces, as recommended by the road board electorate at a recent meeting, or at least no action has been announced.
The Stanly County road board is appointed by an electorate composed of a number of men named by the general assembly under the provisions of a private act. The road board, being the creature of this road board electorate, is supposed to be subject to its orders and decrees. Pursuant to this authority the electorate recommended to the road board that the services of Cranford be dispensed with, and that in the future all projects be handled by contract.
This order, if heeded by the road board, will mean the discharge of Cranford and his entire construction force.
The resolution, according to the following excerpt taken from the minutes of the meeting, was rather drastic and came as a possible result of the recent dispute between the board of county commissioners and the Stanly County road board over the audit of the books of the latter body.
The road electorate of Stanly County met Thursday, August 19th, and the following resolutions and recommendations were named:
“First, that we examined the books of the highway commissioners from the time this board held its first meeting. We found the books in excellent condition, and said books showed all receipts and to whom said accounts were paid. While it is true that we failed to find all invoices for various items, yet the books do show all amounts disbursed and to whom paid, and it is the opinion of this board that the books are now being well kept.
“We also recommend that the highway commissioners discontinue the services of Mr. Cranford as superintendent of roads in Stanly County.
“And we further recommend that all the mules now belonging ot Stanly County be sold, and that the grading of roads be done by contract; also that the machinery that the board now has be turned over to the upkeep forces we now have.”
