Bride and Groom Injured in Car Accident After Wedding, Sept. 3, 1924

Bride of Few Hours Hurt in Auto Wreck South of Madison. . . Mrs. Veter (Vester?) Pyrtle and Husband Run Into by Negro Names Son Joyner

Madison, Sept. 2—Vester R. Pyrtle of the Intelligence community, and his bride of a few hours, formerly Miss Ella Purgason of Mayodan, were painfully hurt Saturday evening on the Madison-Reidsville highway three miles south of town when the Ford car in which they were riding was demolished by being hit by a Dodge car driven by Son Joyner, negro. Joyner, it is alleged, was drunk at the time and was driving on the wrong side of the road at an excessive speed.

Mrs. Pyrtle was thrown to the ground when the cars came together and received injuries to her face and head. Mr. Pyrtle suffered a badly injured knee and other hurts of a lesser nature. Joyner was not hurt.

Mr. and Mrs. Pyrtle, the former 22 and the latter 19, were married Saturday afternoon by Upton G. Wilson, justice of the peace, and were on their way to the bride’s home when the accident occurred. Young Pyrtle is the son of J.L. Pyrtle, well-known farmer, and the bride is the daughter of Mrs. Alice Purgason.

Joyner is reputed a reckless driver. It was said that a few minutes before the wreck he passed through Madison’s main street going like the proverbial bat out of the lower regions but officers were unable to apprehend him at the time. Following the wreck, however, he was taken into custody. --Daily News
