Quaint French Girl
Writes Sweet Letter
The following quaint letter received by Miss Kathlyne
Whitener at Washington, D.C., will prove very interesting to her many friends
and the friends of Lieutenant Albert Lutz of the medical corps in France.
Saint Omand, Montrond
Dec. 5, 1918
Miss Kathlyne:
It is some time since I have made acquaintance of your dear
boy, Albert Lutz. He is coming at home sometime, he has spoken of you often,
also I asked him to give me your address. I hope you will answer my letter as I
will be delighted to think that you wrote to me.
It is two months ago, since Albert has left St. Omand, but
he was back in this town a week ago, for one day, and he has payed us a visit.
But he was not sergeant, he was second lieutenant, you guess, how happy we
were, my parents and I.
I hope to see him again, before he will go back to the U.S.
He has promised to us.
I am 16 years old, and I go to the high school. I play on
the piano, and as I have some American songs, the last time I saw him, I have
played and we have sung all together.
I have not a large family. Father is at the front. He has
been there since the second of August 1914, you see, it is a very long time. I
have two sisters younger than me. I live in a nice house, with granny mother
and sisters. But after peace will be made, we shall go back to Paris, and I
expect to go to America with girl friends.
St. Omand is a little town but very nice. It is situated on
the river Cher and surrounded with woody hills. If you arrive at St. Omand by
the train, the way from the station to the town is a long avenue bordered with
fine old trees. Then you cross the Cher on a new bridge, and after five minutes
walk you reach the center of the town where are the principal buildings, such
as the town hall, college for boys, high school for girls, the theater, the
post office, the hospital a little further on stands the church very old and
artistic one.
There are no trams or modern conveniences for traveling,
except that the town is on a railroad. The town is very quiet and the only
noise just at present is caused by the U.S. army trucks.
There is little industry in the town. However the business
of the town is much greater in proportion than the American towns. It is due to
the fact that St. Ormand is the business center of many surrounding villages.
Once a week, market day is held. The people show their wares
in the streets in front of their stores and market place is filled with all
kinds of goods and chattels. I think, you see my little town now, I shall send
you some pictures.
Now I must close this dear Miss Kathlyne. I shall be your
dear French friend if you want. I am a true friend.
