Charlotte To Fight 20% Increase in Phone Rates, March 20, 1921

The city commissioners have been notified that the hearing of the petition of the Southern Bell Telephone Company for an increased rate will be held March 28. J.A. Bell of the firm of Pharr and Bell, city attorneys, will represent Charlotte among the officials of several North Carolina municipalities who will fight the petition.

The hearing was scheduled for last February, but postponement was called owing to the illness of a member of the Corporation Commission.

The telephone company will be represented at the hearing March 28 by Morgan B. Spier, division superintendent of the company. Mayor Wilson or one of the other two city commissioners may go to Raleigh with Attorney Bell, it was stated.

The telephone company has asked for an increase of approximately 20 per cent in rates in order to make possible desired extensions in the telephone service in Charlotte.
