J. Paul Spence, 53, Former School Supervisor, Committed Suicide, March 14, 1921
Elizabeth City, March 14—J. Paul Spence, former supervisor of schools in Norfolk, Va., and later superintendent of schools in Elberton, Ga., shot himself through the temple at the home of his brother, Joseph C. Spence, Sunday afternoon at 6 o’clock. Spence, who was 53 years old, locked himself in the bathroom prior to the shooting and, when the door was broken open after the shot had aroused members of the family, he was still living. Physicians stated that he could not live through the night. Ill health, which as been continuous for several years, is assigned as the cause.
