The creation of a ruralside beauty spot and “an adventure in contentment,” is the idea behind a new corporation which the secretary of state has authorized and which will be known as the Mallard Creek Rod and Gun Club, with 27 Charlotte men as the incorporators.
The corporation has acquired 160 acres of land, most of it covered with primeval forests, in one of the most picturesque spots in Mecklenburg county, on which they have begun the construction of what will be the largest lake in the county. A club house also will be erected on the plantation and experiments in reforestation and park creation undertaken. As to the reforest station, there will be little of it required, but just a few spots will be planed in trees in order to make the whole 160 acres one large park.
The few hillsides that may be found on the tract denuded of vegetation of plant life will be sown in clover and other recourses will be had to make the place an idyllic spot for recreation and restful retreat.
20 ACRES IN LAKE
As the name of the corporation implies, the venture will be somewhat in the nature of a game and fishing preserve. The big lake will contain perhaps more than 20 acres of area and will be stocked with bass, brem and silver perch. The work of erecting the concrete dam was begun some days ago.
The site selected for the venture is on the old Concord road, 11 miles from Charlotte. Fresh water springs furnish all the water. Acres of massive white oaks such as adorned the forests of Mecklenburg county before the white man came are found on the tract, with other native forest trees mingled with them.
There are three high hills on the tract, one of which is planned to build a club house. The club house may not be built right away, but will be constructed some time in the near future.
Joe Garibaldi is president of the organization and J. Leake Spencer is secretary and treasurer. The board of governors consists of the president and secretary-treasurer, together with Ed Puett, S.B. Alexander Jr., and E.C. Sweeney. Other charter members of the organization are J.L. Dabbs, Robert Lassiter, Horace Johnston, Sterling Graydon and Julian Little.
