Arrests for Selling Narcotics in Asheville, Aug. 2, 1924

Doctor to be Given Hearing. . . One of Three Physicians Arrested for Violating Harrison Narcotic Law

Asheville, Aug. 1—Preliminary hearing of Dr. G.D. Gardner, one of three physicians arrested yesterday for alleged violation of the Harrison narcotic law, will be held before Vonno Gudger, United States Commissioner, this afternoon.

This will be the first hearing as the result of wholesale arrests following the investigation of T.F. Maxwell, federal narcotic agent, and E.L. Wilcox, Internal Revenue department chemist, into the alleged unlawful selling of narcotics to addicts in this city.

The investigation culminated yesterday in the arrest of 10 persons. The physicians arrested, besides Dr. Gardner, were Dr. J.F. Brewer of Asheville and Dr. T.W. Sumner of Fletcher. The others taken included four negroes, two of whom were orderlies at the Oteen Veterans’ Hospital, and it is believed by officers that they had been taking the narcotic supply of the hospital to peddle among addicts.

Maxwell and Wilcox, with the assistance of Detectives Earl Hall and Robert L. Jenkins of the City Police Department, continued their investigation today into the narcotic situation and will make other arrests shortly, it is believed. Several other warrants are now outstanding for persons alleged to have violated the law by selling narcotics to the officers, disguised as addicts. It is expected that nearly a score of persons will face charges before the crusade of the federal officers against the traffic is concluded. These officers started gathering evidence early in June and as a result of the raids yesterday morphine valued at approximately $2,000 was seized. All of those arrested so far have made bond with the exception of the negroes, who have been held in jail.
