Kiwanis Club Has Farmers as Guests. . . The Need of Closer Contact Between Business Men and Farmers

Raleigh, Sept. 11—Believing that there should be a closer relationship between city and country and that the business men of Raleigh should become better acquainted with the farmers of Wake county, the Raleigh Kiwanis Club Friday had as its guests more than 50 farmers, representing virtually every township in the county.

Although the majority of the members of the Kiwanis Club had lived in Raleigh for many years, and the farmers had lived in Wake county all their lives, few of them had ever met before, thus pointing out the need for more get-together meetings of this kind.

The speakers called attention for the need of more and closer contacts between the business men and the farmers, and pointed out how much contacts might become mutually beneficial, both from a business and social standpoint. The fact that farming is essentially a business and requires business methods if it is to succeed was also emphasized.

The part which State College is trying to play in helping the farmer solve his problems was outlined by Dr. I. O. Schaub, dean of the school of agriculture, who said that only a small proportion of farmers who could benefit from the college really do so because of their reluctance to ask questions or seek help in solving their problems. But even so, more than 50 requests a day are received of some sort relating to the farm and its problems.

But in order that more farmers could get the benefit of the college’s information, the extension system was started, in order to take the college to the farmers through the farm agents and the home demonstration agents, and last year the 77 farm agents and 50 demonstration agents actually reached 10 percent of the farm population in the state in their homes, and are reaching more every day. Thus the agricultural school is taking its knowledge and experience direct to the farmers on their farms and giving them practical help and information when and where they most need it.
