“In connection with my leaving the police department, I would like to have it said that I was not discharged—I simply quit,” said Motorcycle Policeman Jim Paxton Tuesday. “When Sergeant Pitts came to a room on West Trade street and got me, I saw that things were not just right, and I told him there that I was through. I don’t deny that I was drinking, but I was not drunk. I had been up all Sunday night trying to make an arrest and I simply took a small amount of whiskey and went to bed when I should have been on duty.”
Police Chief Walter B. Orr said Tuesday afternoon that Sergeant Pitts reported to him facts as set forth by Mr. Paxton. He sustained Mr. Paxton also in the statement that he was up all Sunday night working on a case.
“Mr. Paxton was not drunk when he was brought to headquarters,” said Chief Orr.
