By the Associated Press

Charlotte, N.C., Aug. 9—Kenneth Hale, one of two negroes implicated in the killing of Charles Garwood, taxi driver, near Lexington Thursday night, was arrested by local police officers near Charlotte early today. John Leak, the second negro wanted in connection with the killing, was chased for an hour, according to the officers, but escaped in a swamp.

Hale confessed, according to the officers, that he was with Leak when the latter killed Garwood and to have helped the other negro take Garwood’s body from the automobile but steadfastly denied that he had anything to do with the actual killing. he said, according to the police, that Leake killed Garwood with a heavy piece of iron while the latter was in his car. Hale further confessed that he and Leake together planned the robbery of Garwood, but not the killing, according to the officers.

Search for Leak is being continued. Hale was held in jail here tonight, awaiting further developments.
