Lester Prevatt Bound Over on Bootlegging Charge, Aug. 4, 1924

Federal Dry Agents Make Raid in Raft Swamp Township. . . Lester Prevatt Caught Manufacturing Whiskey—Bound Over to Federal Court—Was Using Mail Order “Canning Outfit” Type of Still—Shipped by Express to Him at Buie. . . Makes Bond and Released

Lester Prevatt, a white man of Raft Swamp Township, was tried here Friday before United States Commissioner W.H. Kinlaw on charges of manufacturing whiskey and was bound over to Federal court. He gave bond for his appearance and was released.

Rural Policeman W.W. Smith, assisted by Federal dry agents, made the arrest Friday when they caught the defendants in the act of making whiskey. The still was a “canning outfit” bought from some mail order house, according to officers. It is alleged that the outfit was shipped to Buie by express a few months ago, and was consigned to Lester Prevatt. This particular “canning outfit” was destroyed by the officers soon after reaching Lumberton. A close examination of the outfit shows that it can be used for canning, but it is better adapted to making whiskey. It is reported that a complete set of copper tubing is sent with each outfit.
