Morganton, N.C., May 23—Fire, thought to have been started by sparks from a shifting locomotive, this afternoon caused damage estimated at $100,000 at the plant of the Burke Tannery here. The tanning plant, the largest in the South, is a branch of the International Shoe Company.
From the front page of The Durham Sun, May 24, 1925. Just considering inflation, that $100,000 would be equivalent to $1.8 million in 2025.
