Davis and Land Found Guilty of Peonage, May 23, 1925

Found Guilty of Peonage

By the Associated Press

Pensacola, Fla., May 23—M.E. Davis and Chas. Land, turpentine operators, and three other persons who were charged with peonage involving involuntary servitude on the part of negro workers on the Davis’s farm, were found guilty on all counts by a federal jury here. The verdict, which was reached last night, was announced today.

From the front page of The Concord Daily Tribune, May 23, 1925. Peonage is another term for slavery, and yes, there were occasionally instances of this form of slavery in the South in 1925.
