The Philatheas of the Memorial Baptist Church entertained Mrs. R.L. Shirley their former teacher, and Rev. Shirley, with a surprise shower last Friday night. It was a veritable pounding and the large dining room table was literally covered with pantry supplies. After an hour every pleasantly spent with the honorees, the class served sandwiches and tea, which they had carried with them. Delicious ice cream, a gift of Mr. Kader Rodgerson of the Williamston Lunch Room, was then served.
From the front page of The Enterprise, Williamston, Martin County, N.C., Tuesday, May 26, 1925. A pounding was a type of party where the honorees were presented with “a pound of this and a pound of that,” typically pantry items like sugar and flour, canned goods, preserves, etc.
