Parents Who Value Learning Moving Their Children from Six- to Eight-Month Schools, May 6, 1925

Staying in School

The fathers and mothers of our County are to be congratulated on keeping their children in school instead of stopping them at the close of the six months term. All over the County the parents are waking to the fact that a child can not make a grade in six months, but it takes eight months. Two years of six months each takes too much time out of the school life. It takes 11 grades to complete a course at a standard high school. The student begins at six years of age and finished high school at 17 years of age if he makes a grade a year. Blut if he goes only six months and has to put in two years to a grade, it will take him along time to complete his course. But many get discouraged and dropout when they have to stop school and get behind their classes. However, we find quite a difference now from that of former years. The high schools are making a fine average this year—the best by a good deal that I have ever known. The Department Commencement this year is a great success. It is so much better than to have such long commencements.

Sincerely,

J.A. Beam
