The Spindale Pressing Club, managed by Mr. B.G. Walsh, and the Pritchard Barber Shop on Spindale Avenue, in the Stonecutter section, were burned last Friday morning. The fire apparently originated from gas fumes in the rear of the pressing club.
The fire spread so rapidly that nothing was saved, except a barber chair and some towels from the barber shop.
Ruthfordton’s new LaFrance fire engine was summoned and rendered valuable assistance in saving the adjoining buildings. Owing to the great distance from the water hydrants, the engine did not arrive in time to save any of the pressing club building.
The building was owned by Mr. J.D. Collins of the Frog Level section, and no insurance was carried. The pressing club was owned by Messrs. R.R. and N.R. James. Mr. Andrew Pritchard was the owner of the barber shop.
The fire did some damage to the Robbins Brothers Store, on the adjoining lot to the Barber Shop.
