Asheville, March 6—Fire at 10 o’clock this morning destroyed the South wing of the Clarence Barker Memorial hospital at Biltmore entailing losses estimated at $25,000. None of the patients confined in that wing was injured due to the quick work of rescuing parties in removing them to the North wing beyond the danger of spreading flames. It is stated that the entire loss will be covered by insurance. On the floor destroyed by fire were located the operating rooms and private rooms. It had not been determined late yesterday just how great the damage would be to the operating instruments and equipment.
This is the second serious fire the Biltmore hospital has experienced since the fire of one year ago. On this occasion the central section embracing the administrative office and superintendent’s quarters was razed to the grounds during a fire breaking out in the early hours of the morning while patients were asleep. Heroic work of the nurses and firemen prevented the flames from spreading to other portions of the building.
Although there were six fires in Asheville today the others were of a minor nature.
