Hickory merchants today, through their association, gave notice that their stores would be closed next Monday, December 26, this day being given as a holiday in lieu of Christmas day, which falls on Sunday. Most other business places in Hickory also will be closed on Monday.
Christmas business began in earnest last week, shopping was unusually lively on Saturday and is expected to be brisk all this week. All the stores remain open at night so every facility is offered the holiday shopper.
As usual this winter, the women folks are reported to be the heaviest buyers. They generally buy for Santa Claus and other members of the family, have the advantage of men in knowing what they want, and do not wait until the last minute to make their selections.
From now until Saturday night the stores will be unusually busy, and many shoppers will make their rounds early in the day.
