The most low-down thieves in the world have been discovered right here in New Bern.
Several days ago the local post of the Salvation Army placed Christmas boxes in various stores of the city. Placards on the boxes informed the public that donations received in the boxes would be used to provide Christmas cheer for the poor and the needy.
Three instances have been reported by local merchants where unknown persons have cut thru the bottom of the pasteboard boxes and extracted all the money. They committed the act while no one was looking and their identity is unknown.
As far as local history goes, this is believed to be the most contemptuous act ever committed within the boundaries of New Bern.
