Shufford Recounts Ramsaur Family History, 1775 to Civil War

David Ramsaur was a son of Jacob Ramsaur, who was a son of Derrick Ramsaur. Jacob Ramsaur married Ann Carpenter. David Ramsaur was born August 4, 1775.

He was born in Lincoln county where he spent his days. He married Sallie Wilfong of what is now Catawba county. They were married on the 19th day of July 1805. She was born in 1788. Sallie Wilfong was a daughter of John Wilfong, who was a son of pioneer Geo. Wilfong. David Ramsaur lived in the town of Lincolnton and was a prominent merchant int he village. He was the elector for his district on the Harrison and Tyler whig ticket in 1840, and cast his vote for the hero of Tippecanoe for president.

He was a prominent member of the Presbyterian church and an elder. He died on the 23rd day of February, 1842, and is buried in the old grave yard in the town of Lincolnton. This grave yard is where the old Lutheran and Reformed church was built in the early days of the country. His wife is buried beside him. Jacob A. Ramsaur was a son of David Ramsaur and his wife. Jacob A. Ramsaur was born January 1, 1808 at Lincolnton, N.C. He married Lucy Mayfield Dodson of Milton, Caswell county on the third day of October, 1833. He was for a long time a merchant in Lincolnton and a cotton manufacturer. He died in 1880. He is buried in the Episcopal church cemetery, Lincolnton, N.C.

Jacob A. Ramsaur and wife were the parents of Stephen Dodson Ramsaur who at the time of his death was a major general in the Confederate army.
