Raleigh, July 31—Dr. Daniel Harvey Hill, former president of the North Carolina State College of Agriculture and Engineering, died this morning at Blowing Rock, where he went Monday with members of his family in the hope that the mountain air would aid in restoration of his health.
Sixty-five years old, Dr. Hill, since 1916 has been engaged in the writing of the military history of North Carolina in the Confederacy, a task for which he resigned the presidency of State College. He was working under a foundation established by Robert H. Ricks of Rocky Mount. Two volumes had been completed and two more had been mapped out at the time of his death.
Dr. Hill had been seriously ill for several weeks.
Daniel Harvey Hill was born at Davidson January 16, 1859, the son of Lieutenant General Daniel Harvey Hill of the Confederate army and Isabella Modrison Hill. At the age of 21 he was graduated from Davidson College with his bachelor’s degree. Five years later he received his master’s degree from the same institution. These were followed by a literary degree from Davidson in 1905 and an L.L.D. from the University of North Carolina in 1910.
He married Miss Pauline White of Milledgeville, Ga., in 1885.
Dr. Hill was a student and teacher for practically all his life. He first started teaching in 1880 at Georgia Military and Agricultural College as professor of English. He remained there until 1889, when he became professor of English of State College here. In 1904 he was elected vice president of State College. Three years later he became president.
