"Lost Bear" in Britt's Township Turns Out to be 'Gator, Aug. 4, 1924

That Lost Bear Proved to be a ‘Gator

That animal whose track led some people to think it was a lost bear dragging a chain, mentioned in Thursday’s Robesonian, proved to be an alligator, according to Mr. J.H. Stone of Britt’s township, who was a Lumberton visitor Saturday. Dragging his tail behind him, as ‘gators have a habit of doing, in his excursion over land, the ‘gator gave the delusion of a dragged chain. This ‘gator, 5 feet, 11 inches long, as mentioned in correspondence elsewhere in this paper, was discovered by Master Sammie Stone, son of Mr. T.F. Stone, while he was plowing last Tuesday in his father’s cotton field in Britt township, at Pope’s Crossing. The boy hollered and the ‘gator was shot and killed by Sandy Thompson, colored. Mr. J.H. Stone says the ‘gator came across Mr. Wilcox’s land from the Sandhill Bay.
