Eugene Black, seriously injured last Sunday night in the auto collision that snapped out the life of Ernest Hyde, Bainbridge, Ga., University of North Carolina student, and more or less seriously injured four others, is now a patient in the New York Eye, Ear, Nose and Throat Infirmary.
Dr. C. W. McPherson, local specialist who went with the injured local boy to New York, has returned home and reported that a successful operation was performed while he was there to save the sight of Eugene’s left eye, almost torn from its socket when he crashed into the windshield.
Plastic surgery, which will be performed to replace the left eyeball which was practically torn from his eye socket cannot be taken for some months, Dr. McPherson said, which will necessitate young Black to remain there at the end of this period. He is expected to be able to return home from this operation in three weeks.
Dr. John B. Wheeler, plastic surgeon, will undertake the operation of grafting on a new eyelid at the proper time, Dr. McPherson said upon his return. The reputation of the New York specialist, based on his success in the work, Dr. McPherson said, convinced him that he will be successful in this case.
Garland Henderson, the other local boy hurt when the poorly lighted Fords collided at midnight on the highway near Latham crossing west of Mebane, has sufficiently recovered to return to his home on Broad street.
