Baalam Admits He Stole a Horse

Why anyone should be so old-fashioned as to steal a horse in this gasoline age, when nearly all vehicles and most types of machinery are propelled by gasoline-consuming motor is unexplainable, except that Baalam McKinley, negro, is old-fashioned. He is a negro who ploughs and prepares gardens “in and around greater Charlotte” as Solicitor George W. Wilson explained, and is accused of having stolen a horse. He, in fact, entered a plea of guilty to that charge in court Monday morning. He has not been sentenced.

It did not come out in the testimony where the defendant got the peculiar Christian name which he boasts, but it is supposed he was named for the Bible character who was surprised one day while riding along the road to have his mule stop and speak to him about some topic of the day. The defendant said Baalam was his real and right name. It was not a mule either that he stole, but a horse.
