Joe Abernethy, a negro well known in police circles, is in a precarious condition at the Good Samaritan hospital suffering from a variety of wounds inflicted by another negro, who used a knife during an affray. The name of the carver is not known by the police though his first name is said to be Phillip. Abernethy will not tell his name, the police said.
The affray resulted from an attack by Abernethy on Phillip’s sister. Phillip warned Abernethy to desist upon his attack on the woman, whereupon Abernethy knocked him down. Phillip went away and returned with a knife. Abernethy’s injuries include a left eye cut out, a slash in the back of the head and two jabs in the back. The affray occurred near Morehead and Graham streets.
