Crazy Negro Severely Cuts Another Early This Morning. . . Herbert Baker Refused to Take Medicine and Proceeds to Carve Man Who Insisted

Herbert Baker, colored, was lodged in jail here this morning following an examination by Dr. E.R. Hardin showing him to be mentally deranged.

Baker was brought to Lumberton this morning after he severely cut Tom Patterson, colored, who lives near Fairmont. Patterson stated that Baker had wandered to his house and appeared sick. He took him yesterday to Fairmont, where medicine was procured for him. Baker refused to take the medicine this morning, and because Patterson insisted, he opened is pocket knife and proceeded to cut Patterson, inflicting several deep gashes. Relatives of the unfortunate negro, who live near Raemon, stated this morning that Baker had been in Norfolk, Va., for some time and that they had not seen him in 14 years. Application has been made for his removal to the asylum at Goldsboro.
