St. Pauls, Feb. 18—Funeral services were held at 10 a.m. yesterday for Mr. Willie Burke, taxi driver on the Fort Bragg reservation, who died Sunday as result of fatal injuries received at a late hour Saturday night when he was assaulted by two Fort Bragg soldiers, Private Howard A. Mathews of Athens, Ga., and C.E. Laughlin of Albemarle, members of company A fourth engineers, who hired him to drive them to a certain quarter where liquor could be secured, according to the story of his assailants following their capture since the affair.
Deceased, who was about 21 years of age, was a son of Mr. and Mrs. J.C. Burke, who live near the Earnaldson Cotton Mill in the eastern part of town. His death occurred shortly after his arrival in a hospital on the camp grounds, where he was taken following the accident. The remains were brought to St. Paul this morning, funeral services being conducted in the local M.E. church. The pastor, Rev. Ivey T. Poole, was assisted by Rev. E.C. Murray D.D., of the local Presbyterian church. Interment was made in the cemetery on the western edge of town.
Besides the widow and a several months-old child, who lived in Fayetteville, deceased is survived by his parents, the father very aged and tottering, while other members of the family, including a sister, Mrs. Ivey, whose maiden name was Janie Burke, are among St. Paul residents. Much sympathy is tendered the family in their bereavement.
