Government Employment Offices May Help Unemployed, July 8, 1921

Unemployment Not Greatly Improved

By M.L. Shipman

The unemployment situation in the State shows slight improvement, in the opinion of the Commissioner of Labor and Printing, who has been observing conditions on his visits to various sections recently for the purpose of establishing free employment offices under authority granted him by the recent Legislature. These offices are established on the basis of municipal, county, State and Federal cooperation.

The Federal Government furnishing equipment, supplies, the franking privilege—and quarters for the offices in places where federal buildings are located. The State pays the salary of each local superintendent to the extent of $1,500 per year. The stenographer and cost of telephone is provided jointly by county and municipal appropriations.

On the basis suggested, free employment offices are at present being operated in Charlotte, Greensboro, Raleigh, Winston-Salem, and Wilmington.
