Joe Bissette, well known Nash County man who has figured conspicuously in the courts of Middlesex Recorder Court District as well as in the higher courts of Nash County during the past and who has a very checkered record intermingled with road and jail sentences, was convicted in the Wilson County Court last week on a charge of having been the instigator and participant in the flogging of Percy Lisles at his tobacco barn in Wilson County some months ago, and was given a sentence of two years on the Wilson County roads, from which sentence Bissette has taken an appeal, his bond being fixed at $5,000.
The case was thrashed out before Judge N.A. Sinclair, who presided at the recent term of Nash Superior Court. It is said Judge Sinclair expressed himself very freely concerning Bissette’s conduct and in passing sentence said: “Old man, it is lucky for you that you were found guilty of simple assault. I believe you to be guilty of secret assault, and had you been found guilty on that county, only for your age I would not hesitate to send you up for 20 years. Your conduct was most cowardly. Two years on the roads of Wilson county.”
In addition to the $5,000 appearance bond, Bissette was required to give a $50 peace bond.
