Fire at Elmer McNeill's Home, March 16, 1925

Mr. Elmer McNeill’s Home Slightly Damaged by Fire. . . Flames Saturday Afternoon Threatened to Destroy Building as Strong March Winds Fanned Them

About $250 damage was done Saturday afternoon to the home of Mr. Elmer S. McNeill, Eight street, by flames which threatened to entirely destroy the building.

Fire Chief Ed. Glover states that the origin of the fire was a bird’s nest built between the chimney and the shingled wall. Either a spark had accidentally fallen into the dry nest, or a bird had carried a match into the nest and managed to start a flame. The fire truck made a quick run, answering the alarm which was ‘phoned in by Mr. McNeill, but the strong March wind had fanned a good hold by the time the firemen could get a line of hose laid. When the first stream of water began playing it looked almost impossible to save the building without ruining everything in it by water, but very little damage was done by water, as the firemen used chemicals just as soon as they could get on the inside of the roof.
