Paul Bowry and a Man Named Vangum Arrested after Shooting John Newton and Others in Newton's Car, March 17, 1925

Dance Ends in an Ambuscade. . . John Newton of Raleigh Seriously Wounded When Sprinkled with Shot

Raleigh, March 16 (AP)—John Newton of this city was seriously wounded with 42 birdshot in his back, and the five people riding with him were wounded Saturday night on the highway in New Light township, when the rear of the car in which they were riding was literally shot to pieces. The others wounded were Nannie Newton, daughter of John Newton, Frank Massey and wife, Minnie Massey, Ruby Massey and Lonnie Massey.

Paul Bowry and Vangum, two men residing in New Light township, were arrested today following an investigation of the affair. They are charged with secret assault with intent to kill.

The party in Newton’s car, it is said, attended a dance in the New Light section, and it is alleged that the two men arrested made threats against one of the Masseys after trouble at the dance.
