Burglars Rob Jess Brown's Store in Landrum, Oct. 2, 1924

Burglars Loot Landrum Store. . . Arrests Made in Spartanburg May Uncover Organized Gang Operating in Carolinas

The general merchandise store of Jess Brown, one of the principal establishments of Landrum, was entered, the safe opened and burglarized of cash and Liberty bonds to the amount of $150 to $250, at some time Friday night by yeggmen, believed to be members of a professional gang operating in North and South Carolina, according to the report received from the owner of the store and members of the sheriff’s force today. The burglars, after filing away the combination of the safe and effecting entrance with steel bit and cold chisel, carefully sorted papers, scattering some $20,000 in mill stocks and other non-negotiable holdings about the floor, making away with one Liberty bond for $50 and an undetermined amount of cash, according to the report.

That the burglars were professionals is believed proved by the nature of the tools which they left in making their get-away and by the cool and methodical manner in which they went about their work. They are believed to have carefully studies the store before executing the robbery and to have been well acquainted with the difficulties which they would meet.

They succeeded in making their escape without leaving the slightest clue as to their identity, according to Mr. Brown and to officers who were detailed to investigate the affair.
