Chapel Hill Can't Wet Dirt Streets Because Pump Has Failed, Oct. 16, 1924

Lacks Water for Sprinkling

The town of Chapel Hill can’t get enough water for its street-sprinkling wagon. The reason is that the University has been delayed in getting the pump that is to replace the one put out of commission by the big flood in August. The pump now in operation produces 240,000 gallons a day. The average daily consumption by town and campus is 300,000 gallons, which means that the surplus in storage is being reduced. It may be that the water supply will have to be cut off at night. If this becomes necessary, Superintendent Bennett of the power plant will give notice to the community.
