Dirigible 'Shenandoah' Passes Through North Carolina, Oct. 11, 1924

Didn’t Know Charlotte Was There

Statesville Daily

The big navy dirigible balloon Shenandoah (for the benefit of any who may not have a dictionary handy, a dirigible balloon is a balloon that can be steered, passed over North Carolina Tuesday night, coming from Danville via Greensboro, and going cross-country south. The Shenandoah didn’t take the trouble to make particular places. For instance, Charlotte was missed, the navigators ignoring the existence of the Queen city. Maybe they didn’t know Charlotte was there. If they didn’t, something should be done about it. But Charlotte is in a class with Statesville for once. The dirigible didn’t come our way. The big balloon is making a trial trip from coast to coast, starting from Lakehurst, N.J., at 10 o’clock Tuesday morning. It traveled at an estimated height of 1,600 to 2,000 feet and the speed was estimated at 40 to 50 miles per hour.
