Joe Swindell, Shot by Little Girl's Grandfather, Recovering, Oct. 10, 1924

To Remove Swindell to His Father’s Home. . . Case Costly to Pasquotank County Taxpayers; Sues Farrier for $100,000

With a suit entered against J.D. Farrier (Farrior) of Wilson for $100,000 damages, Joe Swindell who was shot in the Pasquotank County jail on August 21, seems to be recovering, the wound in his back is healed up, and the county commissioners expect to remove him to the home of his parents in a few days. Swindell still complains of pain in his legs. Only one guard is being kept at the hospital now, according to Chairman Burfoot of the County Commissioners, this being all that is necessary to comply with the court order, and will reduce the expense.

Swindell was shot by the enraged grandfather of a child Swindell was held in jail for outraging, He walked in the jail on August 21, shot Swindell and then gave himself up to the law. He was given bond of $15,000 and will be given preliminary hearing, as soon as Swindell feels like coming out to testify against him.

Swindell alleges in his suit that the defendant is worth over a million dollars. The defendant has not returned his answer to the complaint.

The carelessness in allowed Farrior to walk in the jail is costing the county a pretty penny. Saved by a skillful surgery from a close grapple with death, there is no telling what his surgical nursing and hospital fees will cost the county.

Guards kept at the hospital day and night have been paid $400 to date and the cost of the case to the taxpayer may run well over $1,500.
