Two Car Accidents in New Bern Oct. 4, 1924

Two Auto Mishaps in City Yesterday Afternoon. . . Defective Steering Gear Sends Car into Tree on National Avenue, Other Smash Downtown

Two automobile accidents occurred in the city yesterday afternoon, one being the result of reckless driving, according to witnesses; the other the result of defective steering gear.

One crash occurred on National avenue when the Chevrolet coupe driven by Boatswain Peterson plunged into a tree after the steering gear had locked when the driver turned out of the street to avoid a collision with a machine crowding it from the rear. The wheels locked, and unable to turn the car to the pavement Boatswain Peterson was forced into a tree. The car was badly damaged.

The other crash occurred at the intersection of Craven and Broad streets. A man from the country was driving down Broad in a Ford touring car, swept up from Craven street and turned up Broad, crashing into the front of the Ford, bursting a tire and bending up a fender.

The names of the drivers in this smash could not be learned. It was said, however, by those witnessed it, that the farmer had blown his horn before reaching the crossing, and that the recklessness of the other driver who hurried off a second or two after the crash, was responsible for the collision.
