Raleigh, Sept. 13—Captain S. A. Ashe, federal court clerk, celebrated his 86th birthday by working gingerly and walked up the street as usual. The captain, who has saved the history of the state without quite getting the kick from the Mecklenburg declaration that others have, is still going strong as editor and historian. He is in better shape than he has been for 10 years.
